CNN —Russia is formally seeking to rejoin the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, nearly 18 months after it was suspended from the body following its invasion of Ukraine. Russia has been accused of a huge number of human rights abuses over the course of its war in Ukraine, and the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for its President Vladimir Putin over an alleged scheme to deport Ukrainian children to Russia. Russia had joined the council in January 2021, as one of 15 countries elected to serve a three-year term. Russia remains one of five permanent members of the UN’s Security Council, and no clear legal framework exists to remove it from that post. Moscow last took the presidency of that council, which rotates among the 15 members on a monthly basis, in April.

General Assembly (UNGA). Due to a 1971 U.N. resolution, Taiwan has been excluded from the international body, which recognizes the People's Republic of China as the legitimate representative of China to the U.N."The government of Paraguay expresses its support for the Republic of China - Taiwan to be an integral part of the United Nations system," Pena said. Paraguay is the last South American country with formal relations with Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. When asked about Taiwan last week, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said exclusion of anyone can harm global goals.

"We note with deep concern the existing disparities between developed and developing countries in terms of conditions, possibilities and capacities to produce new scientific and technological knowledge," the final declaration of the G77 group of developing nations and China said. China maintains that it is not a G77 member, despite being listed as one by the bloc, but Beijing says it has supported the group's legitimate claims and maintained cooperative relations. At the same time, it calls for more cooperation between member nations in science, technology and innovation as strategies for their development. While more than 100 member delegations participated in the summit, only Brazil and a few dozen others were led by heads of state.

Last year, the U.N. recorded 293 security incidents that affected relief missions to east Congo, resulting in the death of nine humanitarian workers. The U.N. Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) unveiled the two repainted World Food Programme helicopters this week. Their colour is meant to avoid confusion with the white ones used by the U.N. peacekeeping mission MONUSCO, which have been attacked in the past. Eight peacekeepers were killed when a MONUSCO helicopter on a reconnaissance mission crashed in the midst of rebel fighting in March last year.
